How to Install, Repair, or Treat Your Garden Decking
The DIY Checklist:
What You’ll Need
1.
GEAR
(PPE)
Safety Glasses: Protects eyes from flying sawdust during timber cuts and splashback when applying deck cleaners or stains.
Ear Protection: Essential when using high-powered circular saws, mitre saws, and sanders over extended periods.
Gloves: Heavy-duty work gloves to avoid splinters while handling rough-cut joists, plus chemical-resistant gloves for applying deck cleaners and oils.
Knee Pads: Protects your joints from strain while kneeling to secure deck screws and layout joists.
2.
EQUIPMENT
Drill/Driver: Used to sink deck screws and drive structural fixings into the timber frames.
Mitre/Circular Saw: For making clean, perfectly square crosscuts on structural joist timbers and finishing decking boards.
Orbital Sander: Essential for smoothing out rough timber patches and removing old, peeling paint or stain treatments.
Spirit Level (Long): Ensures that both your main frame and top deck boards are straight and sloped slightly away from your home for drainage.
Tape Measure & Pencil: For marking cutting lines on your timber layout.
Stiff Brush / Power Brush: For scrubbing off deep-seated dirt and algae with deck cleaner.
Roller & Extension Handle: For fast, uniform application of decking oils, stains, or protective paints.
Spacing Tool: Keeps a consistent gap (typically 4mm to 6mm) between deck boards for expansion and water drainage.
3.
Decking Boards: High-quality treated softwood or composite boards to finish the walking surface.
Joist Timber: Heavy-duty pressure-treated timber (commonly 150mm x 50mm or 100mm x 50mm size) to build a robust structural framework.
Exterior Deck Screws: High-quality coated or stainless steel screws that resist rust and corrosion in damp climates.
Joist Hangers: Heavy-duty metal brackets to connect joist timbers securely to your ledger boards or outer frame.
Deck Cleaner & Brightener: Formulated to strip away grey wood cells, dirt, and slippery algae before painting or oiling.
Deck Oil/Stain/Paint: Keeps the timber hydrated, prevents splitting, and adds a decorative, water-resistant shield.

Garden Decking Calculator
Estimated Basket Materials Required
• Joists Frame: Sub-frame joists are calculated using 400mm spans. We assume a 150mm x 50mm timber frame structure layout.
• Screws: Sinking 2 screws at every cross-section intersection requires roughly 35 screws per square metre of surface area.
• Treatments: One 5L tin of decking cleaner treats roughly 30 square metres. One 5L tin of deck oil or stain covers roughly 20 square metres with a standard two-coat finish.
