How to Fit Garden Edging and Timber Boards
The DIY Checklist:
What You’ll Need
1.
GEAR
(PPE)
Heavy-Duty Work Gloves: Protects hands from splinters when handling rough timber boards and safeguards skin from wet preservative coatings.
Safety Glasses: Crucial protection against flying wood chips, soil particles, and splashing liquid wood preservative.
Dust Mask (P2 or FFP2): Essential when cutting treated wood to prevent breathing in toxic chemical-laden wood dust.
2.
EQUIPMENT
Cordless Drill & Driver Bits: High-torque drill to drive heavy-duty exterior screws or structural timber timber-bites deep into the support pegs.
Spade & Trenching Shovel: For excavating a neat, straight trench along the perimeter edge lines.
Hand Saw or Circular Saw: For making clean, square end-cuts to custom-fit your border board transitions.
Spirit Level (1200mm) & String Line with Pins: Critical layout guides to keep your runs completely straight and vertically plumb.
Lump Hammer or Sledgehammer: For driving timber support stakes or pegs deep into the native subsoil.
Stiff Paintbrush: To coat any freshly cut timber raw edges with external wood preservative.
Tape Measure & Pencil: For marking run lines and board cutting targets.
3.
Garden Timber Edging Boards or Sleepers: High-grade pressure-treated boards (typically measuring 2400mm x 150mm x 22mm) or heavy-duty sleepers (such as 2400mm x 200mm x 100mm) for raised borders.
Timber Support Pegs / Stakes: Pointed timber stakes (typically 50mm x 50mm x 450mm) driven deep into the ground every metre to brace and lock the boards.
Exterior Wood Preservative: Specialized brush-applied end-grain wood preservative to seal raw cuts against soil rot and fungal decay.
Exterior Grade Screws or Timber Spikes: Corrosion-resistant structural woodscrews (such as 75mm deck screws for standard boards, or 150mm timber bolts for sleepers).
Gravel or Sharp Sand: Coarse sand or drainage aggregate laid at the base of the trench to prevent timber from sitting in standing pool-water.

Garden Edging & Timber Board Calculator
Estimated Materials Required
• Board Layout: Designed around standard 2400mm long planks. One tin of 1L preservative is calculated to cover approximately 20 linear metres of treated timber board trims.
• Drainage Bedding Yield: Gravel calculation estimates a trench width of 150mm. Sinks approximately 40kg of drainage aggregate per 5 linear metres of run at a 50mm depth.
