When buying sleepers for raised beds, ensure they are pressure-treated with garden-safe preservatives. Avoid using old, recycled railway sleepers as they are often coated in creosote, which can seep into your soil and harm edible vegetable crops.

Top Tip: Always Line the Inside.

To protect your timber from direct constant moisture from the wet internal soil, line the inside walls of your raised bed with heavy-duty plastic or leftover damp-proof membrane before filling. Only cover the vertical sides, leaving the bottom open to the soil below to allow free drainage.

Step-by-Step DIY Installation Guide

01

Prep and Site Clearance

Find Your Spot:

Choose a level site that receives at least six hours of direct sunlight daily if growing vegetables.

Clear the Turf:

Use your spade to slice away existing grass and weeds. Dig down roughly 50mm within the footprint to create a clean, flat dirt base.

Dry Fit and Level the Base

Arrange the Base Sleepers:

Place your first layer (course) of sleepers on the prepped ground in a rectangular frame.

Check for Square:

Measure diagonally from corner to corner in both directions. If the two diagonal measurements are equal, your frame is perfectly square. Use your spirit level across all sides to make sure the base sits completely flat.

Secure the Base Joints

Drive the Corner Anchors:

Drive 50mm x 50mm treated timber battens into the interior corners of your frame.

Screw Sleepers to Battens:

Drive heavy-duty exterior screws through the sleepers directly into the internal corner battens to lock the base frame together. Pre-drill pilot holes to prevent the timber ends from splitting.

Lay Additional Sleeper Courses

Stagger the Joints:

If you are building a multi-layered raised bed, stagger the vertical joints (like brickwork layers) to maximise structural strength.

Vertical Screw Locking:

Drive long structural timber screws vertically down through the upper sleepers into the lower sleepers to bind the vertical layers together.

Lay the Weed Membrane

Line the Bottom:

Lay your heavy-duty weed membrane flat across the bottom of the soil bed. This prevents invasive grass and weeds from growing up.

Secure the Fabric:

Tuck the sheet edges up against the interior wooden walls and secure them firmly in place using plastic pins or metal staples.

Fill and Finish the Bed

Add the Soil Mix:

Fill your bed with a blend of roughly 60% topsoil and 40% compost. Fill to approximately 50mm below the top edge of the sleepers.

Top with Bark Chips:

Spread a neat 20mm to 30mm layer of bark mulch across the top to finish. This traps essential moisture in the soil and prevents surface weed seeds from sprouting.
