How to Construct a Timber Raised Garden Bed
The DIY Checklist:
What You’ll Need
1.
GEAR
(PPE)
Heavy-Duty Gardening/Work Gloves: Protects hands from rough wood splinters and skin contact with wet chemical soil or compost.
Safety Glasses: Guards eyes from flying wood debris when sawing timber or kickback dirt during excavation.
Dust Mask (P2 or FFP2): Highly recommended when cutting pressure-treated timber or pouring dry bags of soil mix.
2.
EQUIPMENT
Spade & Garden Fork: For turf removal, ground levelling, and breaking up heavy underlying clay.
Spirit Level: Crucial to ensure your bed settles flat and won't spill soil or pool water unevenly.
Cordless Impact Driver or Drill: For driving heavy structural timber screws deep into dense wooden sleepers.
Hand Saw or Jigsaw: Necessary if your timber sleepers are not pre-cut to your target lengths.
Tape Measure & Pencil: For marking cut lines and alignment points.
3.
Treated Timber Sleepers: Thick, durable pressure-treated wood blocks (common sizes are 200mm x 100mm x 2400mm or similar).
Timber Battens / Corner Supports: Sturdy 50mm x 50mm treated posts to structurally brace interior timber joints.
Long Exterior Screws: Heavy-duty rust-resistant timber screws (typically 150mm to 250mm long depending on sleeper depth).
Weed Membrane & Pins: Heavy-duty woven landscaping fabric to block deep-growing weeds from breaking into your planting mix.
Topsoil & Compost: High-grade bulk growing material to pack the bed, mixed in a standard ratio (typically 60% topsoil and 40% compost).
Mulch & Bark Chips: Protects the top layer, retains moisture, and provides an aesthetic, weed-resistant top barrier.

Timber Raised Garden Bed Calculator
Estimated Materials Required
• Soil Mix Yield: To fill a cubic space, we calculate a target breakdown of roughly 60% topsoil and 40% compost (1 cubic metre is equivalent to 1000 litres of material).
• Screws Rule: Calculated assuming 4 long structural wood screws are driven per sleeper joint to ensure rigid stability.
