How to Install a Gravel, Resin, or Block Paving Driveway

The Step-by-Step DIY Guide

The DIY Checklist:
What You’ll Need

Installing a brand-new driveway is one of the most rewarding home improvement projects you can take on. Whether you choose classic block paving, clean and cost-effective gravel, or modern resin, a successful installation depends entirely on a rock-solid foundation. With Ireland's wet climate, proper excavation, robust weed prevention, reliable drainage channels, and solid edging are essential to prevent sinking, water pooling, and shifting over time.

SAFETY
GEAR
(PPE)

Heavy-Duty Work Gloves: Protects your hands from rough aggregates, heavy paving blocks, and abrasive sand or cement.

Safety Glasses & Ear Defenders: Essential protection when operating a loud, vibrating compactor plate or cutting blocks with an angle grinder.

Dust Mask (P2/FFP2): Vital when sweeping jointing sand, cutting pavers, or mixing dry cement dust.

Steel Toe-Cap Safety Boots: Protects your feet from heavy materials, sharp tools, and loaded wheelbarrows.

2.

TOOLS &
EQUIPMENT

Spade & Square Shovel: For manual excavation, leveling soil, and shifting bulk materials.

Garden Rake: Crucial for spreading hardcore and sand bedding evenly across the sub-base.

Wheelbarrow: A sturdy, deep-tray wheelbarrow is essential for shifting tonnes of sub-base, sand, and paving units.

Vibrating Compactor Plate (Wacker Plate - Hire Recommended): Absolutely critical to consolidate the ground, sub-base, and finished paving to prevent sinking.

Block Cutter or Angle Grinder (with Diamond Blade): For making clean, custom cuts on paving blocks and edging kerbs.

Long Spirit Level (1200mm) & String Line with Pins: To set accurate fall levels and ensure your driveway is straight and drains water correctly.

Garden Sprayer: Useful for dampening down aggregates to control dust during compaction.

3.

Materials, Fixings & Accessories

Hardcore (MOT Type 1 / Clause 804): Compactable aggregate used to build a robust, load-bearing sub-base.

Heavy-Duty Geotextile Weed Membrane: Placed under the hardcore to prevent soil mixing with aggregate and stop deep weed growth.

Edging Kerbs: Solid concrete or stone blocks to border and lock the entire driveway footprint in place.

Drainage Channels & Grates: Linear slot drains installed at structural thresholds to redirect rainwater away from your home.

Cement & Sharp Sand: For laying edging kerbs, setting drainage channels, and forming block paving bedding.

Driveway Surface Options:

  • Block Pavers: Interlocking concrete blocks (typically 200mm x 100mm x 50mm or 60mm).
  • Gravel: Decorative angular driveway stones (typically 14mm to 20mm grade to prevent tracking).
  • Resin Kit: Specialized polyurethane binder paired with dried aggregates for a smooth, permeable finish.

Kiln-Dried Jointing Sand: For filling the narrow joints between block pavers to lock them together.

Top Tip: The Foundation Dictates the Future.
Never cut corners on your sub-base. For a domestic driveway carrying vehicle loads, you need at least 150mm of compacted Clause 804/Type 1 hardcore. Compact this in layers of 50mm to 75mm at a time with your wacker plate. If you compact 150mm all at once, the lower half will remain loose, leading to wheel ruts and sinking later.
Top Tip: Direct Your Drainage.
Under Irish regulations, you must handle surface water run-off within your property boundaries. Always design your driveway to fall away from your house at a gradient of at least 1:80 (a 12.5mm drop for every 1m of length). Install linear drainage channels across the garage threshold or bottom of the slope, directing the water to a dedicated soakaway or garden border.

Step-by-Step DIY Installation Guide

STEP

01

Planning, Layout & Fall Lines
Map the Driveway:
Push steel pins into the corners of the planned driveway area and run a tight builder's string line between them.
Establish the Fall:
Use a spirit level and line level to establish a gentle downward slope of 1:80 away from any building structures to manage heavy rain.

STEP

02

Excavation
Clear the Topsoil:
Dig out the entire driveway footprint. For block paving or resin, dig down roughly 200mm to 250mm to account for 150mm of hardcore, a sand/bedding layer, and the pavers themselves. For gravel, a depth of 200mm is standard.
Flatten the Subgrade:
Clear any large roots or rocks, then run your compactor plate over the raw earth to create a solid, uniform subgrade.

STEP

03

Lay the Geotextile Membrane & Sub-Base
Roll Out the Membrane:
Lay heavy-duty geotextile weed membrane over the compacted soil, overlapping any joints by at least 300mm.
Add the Hardcore:
Shovel in your Clause 804 / MOT Type 1 aggregate. Build it up in 75mm layers, spraying a light mist of water over it to keep dust down and assist compaction. Compact each layer thoroughly with the wacker plate (run over the entire surface at least 4 times per layer).

STEP

04

Install Edging Kerbs & Drainage Channels
Mix Concrete Bedding:
Mix a dry, strong concrete mix using 4 parts sharp sand to 1 part cement.
Set the Edges:
Lay a 100mm deep concrete bed along your perimeter string lines. Press your edging kerbs into the bed, tap them flush using a rubber mallet, and back them with a concrete haunch (sloping shoulder) to lock them in place permanently.
Install Drainage:
Lay your linear drainage channels on a similar concrete bed at structural thresholds, ensuring they slope toward a suitable gully, soakaway, or drainage outlet.

STEP

05

Lay Your Chosen Driveway Finish
Option A: Interlocking Block Paving
Spread Bedding Sand:
Brush a generSpread a 30mm layer of damp sharp sand over the compacted sub-base. Use long screeding rails and a straight timber edge to smooth and level it perfectly.ous coat of penetrating timber preservative over all exterior surfaces, paying close attention to end-grains, joints, and bottom edge trims. Allow to dry.
Lay the Blocks:
Lay your blocks starting from a straight edge or corner. Place them tightly together, working in a staggered pattern (like a herringbone layout). Do not step on the fresh sand bed; always work from the laid blocks.
Make Cuts:
Use a block cutter or angle grinder to trim blocks to fit gaps along your edging kerbs.
Option B: Decorative Gravel
Spread Bedding Layer:
If using cellular gravel grids to keep the stones from shifting, lay them out over the compacted sub-base now.
Pour the Gravel:
Shovel in decorative aggregate (14mm to 20mm grade) to a uniform depth of roughly 40mm to 50mm. Use a garden rake to spread it flat and level.
Option C: Modern Resin Driveway
Prepare Base:
Resin must be laid on a clean, dry concrete or open-graded asphalt base over your compacted sub-base.
Mix and Apply:
Wear your PPE. Mix the two-part polyurethane resin in a clean bucket, then add the dry decorative aggregates in a forced-action mixer. Tip the wet mixture onto the driveway and trowel it flat to a depth of 15mm to 18mm, smoothing it out with a clean steel trowel.

STEP

06

Finishing & Compacting (For Block Paving)
Sweep in Kiln-Dried Sand:
Ensure the paving is completely dry. Pour fine kiln-dried sand over the driveway and sweep it into all joints using a soft broom.
The Final Compact:
Run your wacker plate over the paved surface to bed the blocks firmly into the sand and settle the jointing sand. Top up any empty joints with more sand and sweep clean.
