How to Repair and Strengthen Your Timber Deck Frame

The Step-by-Step DIY Guide

What You’ll Need

A beautiful timber deck is only as safe as the structural sub-frame beneath it. Due to Ireland's persistently damp and rainy climate, deck joists and structural posts can become vulnerable to wood rot and joint failure over time. Replacing or reinforcing compromised joists, using heavy-duty corrosion-resistant fixings, and applying preservative treatments will extend your deck's lifespan significantly without the cost of a complete rebuild.

Dust Mask (P2 or FFP2): Protects your lungs from toxic dust when cutting pressure-treated timber or cleaning away dry wood rot spores.

Heavy-Duty Work Gloves: Essential for handling rough structural timber and avoiding splinters or nasty chemical contact with preservatives.

Safety Glasses: Guards your eyes against flying timber chips, old rusted screw fragments, and preservative drips.

Stiff Wire Brush: Useful for cleaning moss, debris, and loose rot off old solid timbers.

Materials, Fixings & Accessories

Structural Deck Hardware: Galvanised flat plates, angle brackets, and heavy-duty corner braces to reinforce weak timber joints.

Exterior Decking Screws: High-tensile structural timber screws with a green organic weather-resistant coating or stainless-steel finish to withstand severe outdoor elements.

Joist Hangers: Hot-dip galvanised structural metal hangers specifically designed for standard outdoor timber widths (such as 47mm).

Timber Preservative: An industrial-strength brush-on end-grain timber preservative to coat all freshly exposed wood cuts and protect against wet rot.

Replacement Structural Timber: Grade C16 or C24 pressure-treated structural timber, typically sizing at 47mm x 150mm or 47mm x 200mm, to match your current sub-frame depth.

Top Tip: Seal All Fresh Saw Cuts!
Pressure treatment only penetrates a few millimetres into structural timber. Whenever you cut, notch, or drill a replacement joist, you expose raw, untreated timber fibers. Always brush at least two coats of specialized end-grain timber preservative onto these exposed cuts to prevent moisture from taking hold.
Top Tip: Always Sister Weak Joists.
If an existing joist has a localised soft spot but is otherwise solid, you don't need to rip it out entirely. You can "sister" it. Cut a piece of matching pressure-treated timber long enough to extend at least 1000mm past the damaged area on both sides, clamp it flush to the original joist, and bolt or screw them securely together.

Step-by-Step DIY Installation Guide

01

Access and Inspect the Sub-frame
Clear the Workspace:
Use your crowbar or pry bar to gently lift the decking boards over the damaged zone. Keep the removed boards organised so you can screw them back in later.
The Screwdriver Test:
Take a flat-head screwdriver and firmly press it into the sides of your joists, ledger board, and posts. If the metal easily sinks into the timber, you have discovered active wet rot that must be cut out or reinforced.

Clean and Prep the Frame
Remove Debris:
Clean away packed leaves, dirt, and organic mould between the joists using your wire brush. Trapped moisture accelerates structural rot.
Let It Dry:
If possible, allow the exposed sub-frame to dry out on a clear day before applying any chemical treatments.

Cut Away Rot and Apply Preservative
Trim the Decay:
For isolated rotting timber, cut back past the soft area until you reach solid, bright wood.
Apply Treatment:
Put on your safety glasses, gloves, and P2 dust mask. Generously coat all damp-affected areas and any raw cut timber ends with your timber preservative. Allow it to soak in completely.

Sister Weak and Damaged Joists
Measure and Cut:
Measure the length needed for your sister timber, ensuring it spans well beyond the weak point. Cut a matching section of C16 or C24 structural timber (typically 47mm x 150mm).
Align and Clamp:
Push the new sister timber tightly against the old joist. Use your spirit level to ensure the top edges are perfectly flush, ensuring your deck boards will sit completely flat.
Secure the Sister Joist:
Drive structural exterior screws through both timbers in a zig-zag pattern spaced every 300mm to lock them into a single, high-strength beam.

Install Joist Hangers and Structural Brackets
Position the Hangers:
Slip hot-dip galvanised joist hangers underneath any loose joist ends where they meet the main ledger or rim board.
Fix to the Frame:
Use your cordless drill to secure the hanger. Drive structural exterior screws into every single designated nail/screw hole on the hanger. Do not skip holes, as this compromises the load rating.
Reinforce Corner Joints:
Fit structural flat plates or heavy-duty angle brackets to any corners or post connections that show signs of minor sagging or separation.

06

Re-fit and Secure Decking Boards
Position the Boards:
Lay the decking boards back over the repaired frame, maintaining a uniform 5mm gap between them for water drainage.
Fix Securely:
Use high-quality green coated exterior screws to secure the boards. Pre-drill the ends to prevent splitting the dry decking. Drive two screws at every joist crossing point, sinking the heads just flush with the timber surface.
