How to Create a Decorative DIY Timber Feature Wall
The DIY Checklist:
What You’ll Need
1.
GEAR
(PPE)
Safety Glasses: Essential to protect your eyes from flying timber splinters when sawing cladding profiles or wood dust when sanding joints.
Dust Mask (P2 or FFP2): Crucial to prevent inhaling fine wood dust and composite fibers when cutting or hand-sanding MDF panels.
2.
EQUIPMENT
Digital Multi-Detector (Stud Finder): Critical to locate hidden electrical cabling, pipes, or timber wall studs behind your plasterboard before fixing.
Spirit Level (Long): Absolutely vital to ensure your very first starter board or panelling rail runs perfectly plumb and level.
Tape Measure & Pencil: For marking highly accurate cut-lines and panel spacing indicators.
Mitre Saw or Hand Saw: A fine-toothed hand saw or electric mitre saw to make neat, clean cross-cuts and tight corner joins.
Caulking Gun: For smooth, controlled dispensing of heavy-duty grab adhesives, decorators caulk, and sealants.
Sanding Block: For holding sanding sheets flat to achieve a professional, seamless surface.
3.
Wall Panelling Kits / Tongue & Groove Boards: Pre-cut MDF shaker strips, slat-wall panels, or traditional pine tongue and groove boards.
Decorative Fixings & Trims: Matching timber dado rails, skirting adaptors, or neat corner profile trim beads.
Heavy-Duty Grab Adhesive: High-strength, solvent-free instant grab adhesive (310ml cartridges) to bond timber panels directly to flat drywall.
Wood Filler or Caulk: Flexible acrylic decorators caulk for filling perimeter expansion joins, and quality wood filler for hiding pin holes.
Sanding Sheets (Fine 180-grit): For sanding down wood filler flush before painting or varnishing.
Lost Head Nails / Brad Pins: Small, headless nails to mechanically hold the boards in place while the structural grab adhesive fully cures.

Decorative Feature Wall Calculator
Estimated Basket Materials Required
• Tongue & Groove Yield: Calculated for standard 100mm wide boarding panels. A 10% waste factor handles corner trim slicing.
• Adhesive Yield: One standard 310ml cartridge of heavy-duty instant grab adhesive covers roughly 1.5 square metres of panelling face.
