What You’ll Need

Undertaking a structural extension or load-bearing upgrade to your home is the ultimate DIY challenge. In Ireland, ensuring your build is structurally sound, windproof, and insulated against damp Irish winters is vital. This guide covers everything from excavating and pouring concrete footings to laying blockwork, installing structural steel lintels (RSJs), putting in the damp-proof course, and fixing structural timber joists.

Cement Mixer (Hire recommended): Vital for consistent batch mixing of foundation concrete and structural mortar.

Scaffolding / Access Towers (Hire recommended): Essential for working safely at heights above shoulder level.

Laser / Digital Measure & Tape Measure: For high-precision layout measurements to keep everything perfectly square.

Screed Board & Spirit Levels (600mm, 1200mm & 1800mm): To guarantee foundations, blockwork, and structural steels are true, plumb, and level.

Sledgehammer & Pry Bars: For demolition, clearing old wall openings, and aligning heavy structural components.

Cordless Drill (Brushless): High-torque drill and driver bit sets for timber fixing and structural framework assembly.

Materials, Fixings & Accessories

Ready-Mix Concrete / Hardcore: Raw aggregates, sub-base material (MoT Type 1 / Clause 804), and portland cement for pouring durable, load-bearing concrete foundations.

Structural Steel (RSJs / Lintels): Heavy-duty structural steel beams or pre-stressed concrete lintels to safely bridge openings and support overhead masonry.

Blocks, Bricks & Mortar: Standard Irish concrete building blocks (440mm x 215mm x 100mm), soft building sand, general-purpose cement, and mortar plasticiser.

C24 Structural Timber: Grade-stamped, kiln-dried C24 structural timber (typically 47mm x 150mm or 47mm x 225mm) for structural floors, ceilings, and flat roof joists.

Wall Ties & Damp-Proof Course (DPC): Double-drip stainless steel wall ties to link double-skin blockwork, and heavy-duty embossed plastic DPC to block rising moisture.

Heavy-Duty Anchor Bolts: High-tensile mechanical expansion anchors (sleeve anchors) or structural chemical anchors to tie timber wall plates or steel plates securely to masonry.

Top Tip: Temporary Structural Propping is Non-Negotiable.
When knocking through walls or expanding existing openings to fit an RSJ structural steel beam, always use robust adjustable steel props (Acrow props) supported by heavy timber sole boards. Failing to support overhead floor joists or brickwork properly before cutting can lead to catastrophic structural failure.
Top Tip: Choose Kiln-Dried C24 Timber for Load-Bearing.
Never use standard rough-sawn timber for structural frames or floor joists. In Ireland, building standards require C24 structural grade timber for load-bearing applications. It is graded to withstand higher stress loads, suffers far fewer natural defects, and keeps your structure flat, strong, and sag-free over time.

Step-by-Step DIY Installation Guide

STEP

01

Excavation and Concrete Foundations
Excavate the Footing Trench:
Dig down to solid, undisturbed ground (minimum 1000mm deep for external walls in typical clay soils). Keep the trench walls vertical and clear out loose soil.
Compact the Sub-base:
Fill the bottom with 150mm of stone hardcore (Clause 804) and compact it firmly
Pour the Concrete Foundation:
Use your cement mixer to blend concrete (typically 1 part cement to 5 parts aggregate/sand mix). Pour the mix to a depth of at least 300mm. Smooth the top with a screed board and verify it is level. Allow it to cure for a minimum of 48 hours.

Building Load-Bearing Blockwork
Set Out and Bed the First Course:
Lay a mortar bed (4:1 sand to cement) on the concrete base. Position standard concrete blocks, using a tightly pulled builder's line to keep the run perfectly straight.
Install the DPC and Wall Ties:
Once you are 150mm above finished ground level, apply a thin mortar bed, lay your plastic DPC strip, and lay the next course. For double-skin walls, embed stainless steel wall ties every 450mm vertically and 900mm horizontally.
Build to Lintel Height:
Raise the blockwork courses, staggering vertical joints by half a block. Continuously check vertical and horizontal alignment using your 1200mm spirit level.

03

Installing Structural Steel (RSJs & Lintels)
Prepare the Bearing Ends:
Ensure the masonry piers at either side of the opening are fully cured. Structural steels must rest on solid concrete padstones (minimum 150mm bearing length on each side) to distribute heavy overhead loads without crushing blocks.
Position the Lintel / RSJ:
Using safe lifting methods and scaffolding, carefully place the steel beam onto the padstones. Use steel shims to pack and level the beam if needed, then bed it in a strong, non-shrink structural sand-and-cement mortar mix.

04

Framing with C24 Structural Timber
Secure Timber Wall Plates:
Lay structural C24 timber wall plates along the top of your blockwork. Bed them on mortar, and secure them down using heavy-duty anchor bolts drilled through the timber into the solid blockwork every 1200mm.
Install Joists:
Measure and space your C24 structural timber joists (typically at 400mm or 600mm centers depending on span specs). Fit timber hangers or sit them directly on the wall plate, secure with structural wood screws, and install solid timber bridging pieces between the joists to prevent twisting.
