Bring the sealed boxes directly into the target room, lay them flat, and let them adjust to the room's temperature for at least 48 hours. Skipping this will lead to planks warping or splitting as they expand.

Laminate floors shrink and expand dynamically with seasonal climate changes. You must leave a continuous 10mm expansion gap between the boards and every wall or structural barrier. Use your floor spacer blocks consistently along every wall edge. This gap is hidden completely at the end by installing matching scotia trim.

Step-by-Step DIY Installation Guide

01

Subfloor Audit and Deep Clean

Level Check:

Ensure your subfloor is dry, structural, and flat. Use a long straight edge; any bumps or deep depressions over 3mm must be addressed before proceeding.

Vacuum Thoroughly:

Use your broom and vacuum cleaner to remove every bit of loose debris, stone grit, or old adhesive. Any hidden particle under your planks will cause clicks or squeaks later.

Undercut Door Architraves

Mark the Thickness:

Lay a scrap piece of underlay foam and a laminate plank upside down flat against your door frame casing.

Cut Flush:

Rest your flushing saw flat across the plank face and cut horizontally into the frame. Remove the timber wedge beneath your cut so your new flooring can slide neatly under the trim for a seamless look.

Roll Out Underlay and Tape Joints

Lay the Underlayment:

Roll out your acoustic underlay foam insulation edge-to-edge across the subfloor path, running it slightly up the walls.

Seal the Seams:

Link adjoining underlay tracks together using vapour barrier tape. Ensure there are no gaps or overlapping sheets to block rising moisture.

Establish the First Plank Row

Set Spacers:

Insert your 10mm floor spacer blocks against the starting wall boundary.

Lay the First Line:

Place your first plank down with the groove side facing out into the room. Click the short ends of subsequent planks together along the line until you reach the end of the first row.

Cut and Stagger Rows

Measure the End:

Turn your final plank around to mark the required end cut length, remembering to account for your 10mm spacer block path.

Cut the Board:

Use your laminate cutter or jigsaw to slice through the plank cleanly. If the leftover piece is longer than 300mm, use it to start your second row, establishing an optimal staggered structural layout.

Lock the Floor Mesh Together

Angle and Click:

Insert the long tongue edge of your new plank into the grooved edge of the fitted row at roughly a 20-degree angle, then press flat to snap it down.

Drive Joints Tight:

Rest your tapping block against the outer edge of the plank and tap it gently with your rubber mallet to lock the long joints tightly. At row ends, swap out the block for your pull bar to safely pull joints snug.

Fit Trims and Finish

Pull Spacers:

Once the final row is locked, remove all floor spacer blocks from around the room's perimeter.

Install Scotia Trims:

Measure and cut your matching scotia trims using a hand mitre saw or mitre box for clean corner finishes. Fix the scotia directly to your skirting boards using panel pins or grab adhesive. Never nail trim directly into the flooring boards, as the laminate floor must remain free to float underneath.
