How to Paint Interior Wood Panelling & Wainscoting

The Step-by-Step DIY Guide

The DIY Checklist:
What You’ll Need

Wood panelling, wainscoting, and tongue-and-groove boards add immense architectural character to traditional and modern Irish homes alike. Refreshing these surfaces requires proper sealing and a durable, cleanable finish coat. Because panelling is subject to frequent traffic, vacuum knocks, and natural wood movement, success depends on a complete basket of proper high-adhesion primers, specialist timber paints, flexible sealants, and fine finishing tools.

1.

SAFETY
GEAR
(PPE)

Dust Mask (FFP2 Rated): Vital to prevent inhaling fine wood dust and old varnish particles during manual sanding phases.

Safety Glasses: Essential eye protection from paint splatters during roller application and rolling overhead wainscoting lines.

2.

TOOLS &
EQUIPMENT

Caulking Gun: For smooth, controlled application of flexible decorator's caulk into long panelling seam lines.

Filling Knife: A flexible steel blade to press lightweight wood filler flush into nail holes and deep grain imperfections.

Mini Roller Kit & Short-Pile Woven Mini-Roller Sleeves: The perfect setup for laying down an even, texture-free paint coat quickly across flat timber face runs.

High-Quality Synthetic Paintbrushes: Essential for precision cutting-in, handling tricky corners, and brushing inside vertical grooves or routed wainscoting profiles cleanly.

3.

Materials, Fixings & Accessories

Interior Wood Undercoat/Primer: A specialized high-adhesion primer formulated to lock onto raw wood or seal over slick, existing varnish or lacquer coatings to prevent peeling.

Satin or Eggshell Timber Paint: Mid-sheen, highly durable interior wood finish paint designed to withstand wipes, bumps, and daily wear.

Lightweight Wood Filler: Easy-to-sand internal wood compound to level off surface pinholes, joints, or dents.

Fine Sandpaper: 180-grit or 240-grit sheets to scuff-sand the wood, providing a mechanical key for paint adhesion and smoothing between coats.

Low-Tack Painter's Tape: High-performance tape to mask out perfect borders along carpets, skirting boards, or plaster walls without pulling up prior coatings.

Heavy Dust Sheets: Thick protective coverings to shield flooring, carpets, and nearby furniture from rolling spray or rogue drips.

Decorators Caulk: A flexible, paintable acrylic sealant used to fill narrow gaps where panelling sections meet plaster walls or trim moldings.

Damp Microfibre Cloths / Tack Cloths: For wiping away microscopic sanding dust particles to achieve a factory-smooth final finish layer.

Top Tip: Never Skip the Groove Sanding.
Many DIYers only sand the large flat faces of the panelling boards, leaving the narrow vertical grooves untouched. Existing varnish or sealer inside these recessed tracks will repel new paint, causing it to run, pool, or peel away later. Wrap your fine-grit sandpaper around the edge of a scraping tool or use a folded strip to thoroughly scuff-sand the inside of every single groove track.
Top Tip: Use Caulk Only on Internal Borders, Not Between Slat Joints.
Use decorators caulk exclusively where the wood panelling frame hits static borders like plaster walls, ceilings, or horizontal skirting tracks. Do not fill the expansion gaps between individual tongue-and-groove slat runs with caulk. Timber expands and contracts dynamically with the moisture changes of the Irish seasons; filling these functional seams will lead to unsightly, bunched-up ridges of sealant as the wood shifts.

Step-by-Step DIY Installation Guide

STEP

01

Room Masking & Hardware Prep
Protect Your Floor:
Lay heavy dust sheets over all carpets or hard floor areas below the installation wall run.
Apply Painter's Tape:
Run low-tack painter's tape along the skirting bottom track, adjoining plaster walls, and electrical socket perimeters. Press the tape edges down firmly with a cloth to prevent paint bleed.

STEP

02

Surface Filling & Defect Repairs
Apply Wood Filler:
Inspect the wainscoting or panelling face for exposed nail holes, structural knots, or surface dents. Use your filling knife to pack lightweight wood filler firmly into these spots, leaving the filler slightly proud of the wood face.
Allow to Dry:
Leave the filler compound to cure fully according to the package directions before attempting any sanding.

STEP

03

Scuff Sanding & Dust Elimination
Sand Thoroughly:
Don your FFP2 dust mask and safety glasses. Use 180-grit fine sandpaper to lightly sand all wood surfaces. Your goal is to remove any glossy surface sheen and level your patches flat.
Wipe Down:
Use a damp microfibre cloth or an adhesive tack cloth to completely pick up and remove all residual powdery white wood dust. Let the wood face dry completely.

STEP

04

Seal Boundaries with Decorator's Caulk
Load and Gun:
Place a tube of decorators caulk into your caulking gun and trim the nozzle tip at a 45-degree angle matching your target seam size.
Run Sealing Lines:
Extrude a smooth, steady line of caulk along the joints where the panelling meets the plaster wall, corner casings, or top dado tracks. Smooth the bead flush with a damp finger or tool edge, and let it skins over for roughly 30 to 45 minutes.

STEP

05

Apply the Wood Primer / Undercoat
Cut-In Recesses First:
Stir your interior wood undercoat/primer thoroughly. Use a high-quality synthetic paintbrush to coat the deep vertical grooves, routed wainscoting design valleys, and perimeter borders first.
Roll Flat Areas:
Immediately follow behind with your short-pile woven mini-roller kit to coat the large flat panel boards. This layout eliminates any visible brush strokes. Let the primer coat dry completely for the recommended timeframe.

STEP

06

Execute the Topcoat Finish Layers
Intermediate Scuff:
Lightly run 240-grit sandpaper over the dry primed coat to knock down tiny paint nibs. Wipe clean with a fresh tack cloth.
Apply First Finish Coat:
Using the same method (brush inside grooves first, then roll flat faces), apply your durable satin or eggshell timber paint.
Apply Final Topcoat:
Allow the first coat to dry completely overnight, apply another light scuff sand, and apply your second and final topcoat layer. Carefully pull up the painter's tape while the final paint film is still slightly tacky to leave crisp lines.
