How to Make Rolling Under-Bed Storage Drawers

The Step-by-Step DIY Guide

The DIY Checklist:
What You’ll Need

Maximising storage space in Irish homes can be a challenge, particularly in bedrooms with limited floor space. Building custom rolling under-bed storage drawers is an exceptional, low-profile project that transforms forgotten gaps into heavy-capacity, roll-out storage bins. This guide provides a complete hardware basket overview to ensure a professional, durable result.

1.

SAFETY
GEAR
(PPE)

Dust Mask (FFP2 Rated): Critical for keeping fine airborne wood particles out of your respiratory tract when sawing and sanding plywood sheets.

Safety Glasses: Essential eye protection against stray timber chips, splinters, and flying sawdust.

2.

TOOLS &
EQUIPMENT

Circular Saw or Hand Saw: For making clean, straight cuts across large structural sheets of plywood.

Cordless Drill Driver: For pre-drilling pilot paths and quickly driving fixing screws home.

Countersink Drill Bit: Prepares the wood surface so your screw heads sit completely flush or slightly sub-surface.

Orbital Sander & Sandpaper: For removing splinters along rough sawn edges and prepping faces for a smooth finish.

Tape Measure: For making precise cut markings and verifying clearance metrics.

Speed Square: Essential for checking 90-degree lines before making panel cuts and squaring joints.

Paint Brush or Mini Roller: For applying your final timber primers, sealers, varnishes, or decorative paints.

3.

Materials, Fixings & Accessories

12mm or 15mm Plywood Sheets: Heavy-duty plywood panels to construct the four primary structural walls (sides, front, and back) of the drawer frame.

6mm Plywood Panels: Light yet resilient timber sheet to form a sturdy bottom floor base panel.

40mm Low-Profile Swivel Casters: Omnidirectional heavy-duty swivel wheels designed to carry the drawer comfortably over carpets or hard floor finishes.

Countersunk Wood Screws (30mm): For joining the main 12mm or 15mm plywood box perimeter frame.

Caster Mounting Screws: Short, heavy-gauge pan-head wood screws sized perfectly to lock the metal caster plates into the base without breaking through the bottom face.

Wood Glue (D3 Water-Resistant): High-strength PVA wood adhesive to secure all structural joints and ensure structural longevity.

Cup Pull Handles or Flush-Pull Ironmongery: Classic surface-mounted cup pull ironmongery or inset flush handles for a smooth, ergonomic pull grip.

Wood Filler: For hiding recessed countersunk screw heads and matching seams smoothly before painting.

Top Tip: The Clearance Calculation.
Always measure the clear gap height from the bedroom floor up to the absolute lowest edge of your bed frame rail. Subtract exactly 25mm to 30mm from that overall profile clearance to determine the absolute maximum height of your timber box walls. This cleanly accommodates the 40mm caster mounting projection while providing a safety gap to prevent top-edge snagging on bedding.
Top Tip: Double-Down with Glue and Screws.
Under-bed storage units are subjected to abrupt tensile stress when pulled open under full weight loads. Never rely solely on wood screws to hold plywood butt joints together. Always apply a generous ribbon of D3 water-resistant wood glue along the contact edges before driving home your screws, wiping away excess wet squeeze-out with a damp cloth immediately.

Step-by-Step DIY Installation Guide

STEP

01

Metric Verification and Panel Layout
Measure Available Footprint:
Verify floor clearances under the bed frame, checking distances between supporting bed legs and noting total clear depth options.
Mark the Cutting Grids:
Transfer your panel measurements onto the structural 12mm or 15mm plywood sheets. Use a speed square to draw clean, perfectly perpendicular 90-degree cut paths. Repeat for your 6mm bottom base layout sheets.

STEP

02

Cutting the Plywood Profiles
Secure the Workpiece:
Set your raw plywood sheets flat over stable sawhorses or a work surface. Put on your FFP2 dust mask and safety glasses.
Execute the Cuts:
Using your circular saw or a fine-toothed hand saw, cut cleanly along the marked lines to deliver the front, back, side, and floor panels. Keep your feed rate smooth to minimise structural face breakout or splintering.

STEP

03

Joint Preparation and Pre-Drilling
Dress Sawn Edges:
Run an orbital sander or a hand sanding block across all cut raw edges to remove loose splinters.
Pre-Drill & Countersink:
To stop plywood layers from splitting as fasteners enter, mark fixing paths along the joint lines. Drill pilot holes through the overlapping faces using a small twist bit, then follow up with a countersink tool so the screws sit sub-flush.

STEP

04

Assembling the Drawer Box Frame
Bond the Joints:
Apply a neat bead of D3 water-resistant wood glue onto the raw joining ends of the side plywood panels.
Fasten Perimeter Walls:
Push the side panels flush against the inner face of the front and back pieces. Double-check alignment with a speed square, and drive 30mm countersunk wood screws tightly into the pre-drilled points.
Affix the Base Sheet:
Invert the squared frame. Run a continuous line of glue along the bottom edge perimeter. Lay your 6mm plywood base panel perfectly square on top, and anchor it home with screws or panel pins spaced 150mm apart around the edge.

STEP

05

Filling and Face Sanding
Conceal Fasteners:
Press timber wood filler firmly into all countersunk screw recesses and minor seam joint splits using a filling knife. Let it cure fully.
Smooth Sanding:
Sand all dried filler flush using your orbital sander. Gently break any sharp outer plywood corners by sanding a tiny radius edge to give a professional feel.

STEP

06

Installing Precision Casters and Pull Hardware
Mount the Swivel Casters:
Keep the drawer upside down. Position a 40mm low-profile swivel caster into each of the four corners, offsetting them slightly inwards so the wheels can pivot 360 degrees without catching the box perimeter. Fasten them using your pan-head caster mounting screws.
Install Ironmongery Pulls:
Flip the drawer upright. Measure and find the exact horizontal and vertical centre point on the front drawer panel face. Position your cup pull handle or chosen ironmongery, pre-drill shallow pilot paths, and tighten down with the matching screws.

STEP

07

Surface Finishes and Coatings
Paint or Varnish:
Clear away all sanding dust. Apply a dedicated timber primer base coat, followed by a hard-wearing paint layer or clear interior varnish to suit your room décor. Let the coating dry completely before sliding it under the bed.
