How to Mount a Backing Panel for Your Floating Media Console
The DIY Checklist:
What You’ll Need
1.
GEAR
(PPE)
Dust Mask / Respirator: Protects your lungs from fine MDF fibers and plasterboard particles during cutting, drilling, and trimming.
Safety Glasses: Essential eye protection against flying timber splinters, masonry fragments, or adhesive drops while working.
2.
EQUIPMENT
Stud Finder: Used to map out underlying timber studs behind internal hollow plasterboard walls to guarantee secure structural mounting paths.
Hammer Drill: Critical for solid block or brick exterior walls to bore clean fixing holes with masonry bits.
Combi Drill / Driver: For driving timber screws efficiently and counterboring anchor attachments.
Countersink Drill Bit: Enables screw heads to sit completely flush or slightly beneath the timber face, preventing panel obstructions.
Handsaw: A sharp fine-toothed hand saw to complete clean, square cuts across your timber battens and backing boards.
Spirit Level: Guarantees the entire installation framework sits completely vertical and plumb so your console aligns correctly.
Caulking Gun: To smoothly dispense high-strength wood construction adhesive behind structural batten joints.
Tape Measure & Pencil: For marking precise wall center lines and timber panel layout heights.
3.
Decorative Slat Wall Wood Panels or MDF Boards: The main visual layout facing panels, typically sourced in modular lengths such as 2440mm x 600mm.
Timber Battening: Subframe timber strips, typically 50x25mm or 50x50mm profile, creating a reliable mounting structure and an ideal cable cavity space.
Heavy-Duty Wall Anchors: Sized specifically according to your room wall material (metal toggle plugs for hollow drywall or expanding nylon frame anchors for masonry).
Wood Screws: Quality countersunk exterior or interior wood screws, generally 50mm and 70mm lengths.
Wood Adhesive: Heavy-duty, high-grab construction gap-filling adhesive tubes to minimize flexing behind the panels.

Press the batten firmly against your wall line. Check it with your spirit level to ensure it is completely straight.
- For Drywall walls: Drill through the batten into your marked timber studs, then drive 70mm wood screws securely home.
- For Solid Brick walls: Drill through the batten into the masonry using your hammer drill, insert heavy-duty expanding wall plugs, and drive down your masonry frame fixings.

Media Backing Panel & Subframe Calculator
Estimated Basket Materials Required
• Batten Spacing Matrix: Subframe calculation assumes standard timber batten tracks run every 400mm horizontally or vertically to prevent panel flexing.
• Fixing Load Rules: Heavy duty wall structural fixings are allocated at intervals of 4 anchors per structural batten path to secure heavy floating console weights long-term.
