How to Patch Large Holes in Plasterboard Walls
The DIY Checklist:
What You’ll Need
1.
GEAR
(PPE)
Dust Mask / Respirator (FFP2 or FFP3 Rated): Absolutely essential to prevent inhaling fine gypsum and plasterboard dust during cutting and dry sanding.
Safety Glasses: Protects your eyes from falling overhead debris and plaster crumbs.
Dust Sheets / Drop Cloths: Essential for covering floors and furniture. Gypsum dust is incredibly fine and travels easily through household spaces.
2.
EQUIPMENT
Drywall saw: A narrow, pointed jab saw used to cut clean rectangular profiles through the damaged wall.
Utility knife: For scoring patch boards cleanly and beveling damaged outer paper edges.
Filling knife: A wide-bladed knife (typically 100mm to 150mm wide) to feather out the filler mix seamlessly across the joint borders.
Cordless drill: For driving structural drywall fixings quickly without splitting the backing wood strips.
Tape Measure & Pencil: For plotting layout borders and finding accurate patch configurations.
Spirit Level or Straight Edge: Used to check that the plasterboard repair patch sits completely flat with the surrounding wall surface.
3.
Plasterboard offcuts: Small handy panels (matched to standard wall thicknesses like 12.5mm or 9.5mm) to form the new structural repair face.
Timber furring strips: Low-profile treated wood battens (typically 50x25mm or similar) used as rear internal braces to securely screw your patch piece against.
Drywall screws: Black, coarse-threaded screws designed to pull the board and wood framework tightly together without tearing through the face paper core.
Scrim tape: High-strength, self-adhesive fibreglass mesh tape applied directly over the joint edges to permanently bridge the gaps and prevent hairline fractures.
Joint filler compound: A smooth ready-mixed or powder joint cement formulation used to float over the patch and finish the face cleanly.
Fine sandpaper: High-performance 120-grit to 180-grit abrasive sheets used on a sanding block to level the hardened filler surfaces flawlessly before paint application.

Custom Plasterboard Repair Material Calculator
Input the measurements of your squared wall opening box layout below to dynamically generate a recommended materials list and required fixings count.
Estimated Repair Materials Required
• Timber Supports: Dynamically calculates two vertical bracing backing runs extending 100mm past the upper and lower limits of the hole patch opening.
• Fixing Screws Distribution: Based on anchoring parameters placed every 100mm along the structural support line interfaces.
