How to Replace PVC Gutters & Downpipes

The Step-by-Step DIY Guide

The DIY Checklist:
What You’ll Need

Managing Irish rainfall requires a completely water-tight installation. Ensure you have your full safety setup, installation tools, and replacement components packed into your shopping basket before beginning your weekend project.

1.

SAFETY
GEAR
(PPE)

Safety Glasses: Essential for protecting your eyes from falling moss, grit, or old screw heads when working overhead.

FFP2 Dust Mask: Protects your lungs from concrete dust while drilling masonry or handling weathered roof materials.

Work Gloves: Provides grip, puncture protection, and defense against sharp edges on aged brackets or roof tiles.

2.

TOOLS &
EQUIPMENT

Ladder / Ladder Stand-off / Ladder Stay: Crucial safely apparatus to steady your ladder against the wall without crushing your brand-new gutters.

Hacksaw: For making clean, straight cuts through PVC gutter sections and downpipes.

Spirit level: To carefully gauge the subtle downward slope required for fast rainwater transit.

Chalk line: For marking long, perfectly straight lines across your fascia boards to guide your bracket heights.

Cordless drill: For rapidly driving fixings into your structural wood or masonry surfaces.

Tape measure: Essential for precise length planning and bracket interval indexing.

3.

Materials, Fixings & Accessories

PVC gutter running lengths: The open structural collection channels designed to gather surface water run-off from the roof eaves.

Running outlets: The down-drop channel component that routes water from the horizontal gutter run straight into the vertical downpipes.

Stop ends: Fitted end caps used to seal off the open termination points of your gutter run.

Downpipes: Enclosed vertical pipe tracks that drop high volumes of rainwater safely to ground drainage channels.

Fascia brackets: Load-bearing support clips fixed along the horizontal framework to firmly cradle the gutter profiles.

Gutter Unions / Joiners: Sealed coupling components used to connect individual gutter lengths cleanly together.

Downpipe Clips / Saddles: Heavy-duty anchor brackets used to fix the vertical downpipes flush to external wall faces.

Downpipe Connectors & Shoes: Offset bends and termination pipes designed to steer paths cleanly around wall projections and into gully traps.

Silicone Spray Lubricant: Applied to internal neoprene seals to allow the PVC to expand and contract smoothly across changing seasonal temperatures without warping or popping out.

Fascia Board Screws / Wall plugs & Masonry screws: High-performance, corrosion-resistant external fasteners to mount your framework and pipe brackets.

DIY Pro Tip:
If your timber fascia boards show signs of surface softening, sand them down and apply a fresh coat of external paint or replace the damaged wood section entirely before fixing new brackets.

Step-by-Step DIY Installation Guide

STEP

01

Set Up and Safety First
Ladder Safety:
Set your ladder up at a stable 4:1 lean ratio. Secure your ladder stand-off or ladder stay at the upper section to protect your roof eaves and provide a secure, non-slip working stance.
Removal of Old System:
Unscrew or pop the clips of the aged, failing system. Remove sections carefully to prevent old debris or rusted screws from dropping onto windows or paths below. Examine your timber fascia boards for signs of dry rot before proceeding.

STEP

02

Establish the Fall (Drainage Gradient)
Horizontal gutters must never sit perfectly flat. They require a gentle downward slope toward the running outlet to prevent pooling water from turning stagnant or leaking during heavy rainfall.
The Drainage Calculation Ratio:
Aim for a uniform fall of 10mm for every 3000mm of gutter length.
Fix the High and Low Points:
Fix your first fascia bracket at the furthest end of the run from your downpipe, close to the roof tile edge. Next, fix your running outlet at the lowest point where the downpipe will drop.
Snap Your Guide Line:
Secure your chalk line between the high-point bracket and the low-point outlet. Pull it tight and snap it to leave a clean, angled guide line across the length of your fascia board.

STEP

03

Mounting the Fascia Brackets
Standard Spacing Profile:
Fix your intermediate fascia brackets along your snapped line using weather-resistant fascia board screws. Space them at intervals no greater than 1000mm apart.
Heavy Rainfall Support:
In areas prone to heavy, intense downpours or freezing winters with sliding roof frost, reduce your bracket intervals to 800mm maximum to increase load capacity.
Joint Support rule:
Always position a supporting fascia bracket within 150mm of any gutter union, joiner, or running outlet connection to prevent structural dipping under load.

STEP

04

Cutting and Assembling PVC Gutters
Cut to Size:
Use your tape measure to chart distances between structural components. Cut your PVC gutter lengths down carefully using a fine-toothed hacksaw. File away any loose plastic burs from the cut edges.
Lubricate the Seals:
Spray a thin layer of silicone spray lubricant onto the neoprene rubber seals inside your gutter unions, joiners, and running outlets. This permits natural structural movement during high summer heat and cold winter drops.
Clip and Join:
Rest the back edge of your gutter length underneath the rear tab of your fascia brackets, then gently press the front edge downward until it snaps firmly into place under the front bracket clips. Use gutter joiners to bridge multiple lengths, ensuring you respect the internal insertion line indicators marked inside the fittings. Apply stop ends to the open terminations.

STEP

05

Installing Downpipes and Shoes
Plumb Your Path:
Position your downpipe components below your running outlet. If your roof eaves overhang significantly, assemble a pair of offset downpipe connector bends to guide the line back flush against the house wall.
Fix Wall Saddles:
Use your drill, masonry bits, wall plugs, and masonry screws to securely mount downpipe clips and saddles to the building face. Space these vertical clips at a maximum distance of 2000mm apart.
Final Discharge Termination:
Fit a downpipe shoe at the base of your vertical line to cleanly guide water straight over your gully grid or into your rain harvesting tank. Pop a plastic leaf guard into the top running outlet to stop debris from entering and clogging your downpipes.
