How to Fit Doorway Thresholds and Flooring Reducer Strips

The Step-by-Step DIY Guide

The DIY Checklist:
What You’ll Need

Finishing a floor project correctly requires the right transitional strips between rooms. Doorway thresholds clean up raw gaps, while reducer strips manage changes in height between different floor styles (such as wood flooring down to thin vinyl). This project requires a comprehensive basket of profile bars, high-strength grip adhesives, specialized subfloor fixings, precise cutting tools, and essential safety accessories.

1.

SAFETY
GEAR
(PPE)

Safety Glasses: Protects eyes from flying metal filings when using a hacksaw or wood splinters generated during trimming.

Dust Mask: Essential filtration while drilling into subfloors, preventing the inhalation of masonry dust particles.

2.

TOOLS &
EQUIPMENT

Hacksaw: Fitted with a fine-toothed blade to make neat, square cross-cuts through metal profiles.

Fine-Tooth Wood Saw: Essential if you are using premium solid oak transitional strips.

Cordless Drill & Masonry Bit: Used to bore clean, straight fixing pathways into tough subfloor layers like cured concrete slabs.

Screwdriver: Hand tool used to secure strip tracks or visual fixings tightly without stripping the heads.

Tape Measure & Pencil / Fine Marker: For tracking opening gaps down to the millimetre and marking out perfect cut guidelines.

Mitre Box: Guarantees crisp, straight 90-degree guide paths for a snug fit between door jambs.

Caulking Gun: Holds and triggers high-strength grip adhesive canisters cleanly.

3.

Materials, Fixings & Accessories

Aluminium or Oak Threshold Strips: Transitional strips picked to match your interior design profile. Reducer strips bridge uneven floors, while standard thresholds bridge level rooms.

Concrete Floor Screws or Grip Adhesive: Fixings picked based on subfloor setup. Heavy-duty construction adhesive is ideal to avoid hitting underfloor pipes.

Plastic Wall Plugs (Rawlplugs): High-expansion plugs pushed into subfloor anchor holes to lock screws down permanently.

Methylated Spirits / Isopropyl Alcohol & Cloth: Used to strip away structural dirt and grease films along floor boundaries before applying any adhesive.

Painter's Masking Tape: Low-tack protective tape to protect delicate floor coatings near work zones.

Top Tip: Check for Hidden Heating Underneath!
Many modern homes in Ireland have underfloor heating loops or electrical wire paths running through doorways. If you aren't 100% sure what lies beneath the concrete floor surface, do not drill mechanical fixings. Switch your project plan entirely to a high-quality, heavy-duty grip adhesive system instead to avoid punctured pipes.
Top Tip: Leave a Small Expansion Gap.
Timber and wood-laminate floor panels naturally expand and contract as humidity levels change throughout the seasons. When trimming your threshold strip, do not jam it tightly against the floor planks. Ensure your transitional profile leaves a small clearance space underneath so your flooring can slide slightly without bucking.

Step-by-Step DIY Installation Guide

STEP

01

Inspect Floor Heights and Select the Profile
Check for Variance:
Lay your straight edge across the doorway junction from room to room. If both floors rest at identical levels, choose a level threshold bar. If transitioning from thick wood flooring down to a lower tile or carpet base, choose a reducer profile bar.

STEP

02

Clean and De-Grease the Base Tracks
Prep the Surface:
Use a brush or vacuum cleaner to remove loose construction sand and wood chips. Pour methylated spirits or isopropyl alcohol onto a cloth and scrub the subfloor boundary along the doorway line to remove lingering oils, ensuring a strong adhesive bond.

STEP

03

Measure and Mark the Opening Sizing
Measure Tight:
Measure the distance between the inside faces of your door frames at floor level. Mark this length onto your threshold or reducer strip with a pencil or fine marker. Double-check your numbers before making any cuts.

STEP

04

Cut the Strip Profile Squarely
Make a Clean Cut:
Place your threshold strip firmly into a mitre box. If using a metallic strip, use a fine-toothed hacksaw to cut smoothly along your mark. If using an oak strip, use a fine-toothed wood saw to prevent splintering the edges. Clean up any raw burrs with a quick wipe down.

STEP

05

Apply Adhesive Systems
Run the Glue Ribbons:
Load a high-strength grip adhesive tube into your caulking gun. Apply a continuous zig-zag bead of adhesive along the underside track of the threshold strip. If you are using a pure glue-down method, press the bar firmly into place onto the floor and weigh it down with heavy items for 1 hour.

STEP

06

Drill and Fix Mechanical Anchors (If Drilling)
Bore the Anchor Paths:
If using a screw-fix bar over concrete, place the pre-drilled bar template over your doorway and mark the screw slots onto the subfloor. Put your safety glasses and dust mask on, switch your cordless drill to hammer mode with a masonry bit, and drill anchor holes. Push your plastic wall plugs flush into the subfloor holes.

STEP

07

Final Screw Alignment and Pressure Set
Secure the Assembly:
Lay the strip back over the doorway path line, insert your concrete floor screws or fixing pins into the plugs, and hand-tighten them with your screwdriver until the track finishes completely level. Wipe away any oozing adhesive spots with a damp cloth.
