How to Install External Drainage Channels and Gullies

The Step-by-Step DIY Guide

What You’ll Need

Efficient surface water management is critical for protecting your property's foundation, driveway, and garden paving. With Ireland's high volume of rainfall, standing water can quickly compromise sub-bases and brickwork. Installing external drainage channels (often called linear or trench drains) and gully traps provides a direct pathway for rainwater to escape safely into your domestic surface water system.

SAFETY
GEAR
(PPE)

Steel-Toe Boots: Mandatory footwear to protect your feet from heavy stone sub-bases, pre-cast concrete mix, and stone paving blocks.

Heavy-Duty Gloves: Protects your hands from highly abrasive concrete mixes, grit, and sharp plastic or metal edges.

Dust Mask (P2 or FFP2): Essential when cutting hard surface materials like asphalt, pavers, or concrete, or when handling dry cement powders.

Safety Glasses: Crucial guard against flying gravel fragments and abrasive dust during excavation or power cutting.

TOOLS &
EQUIPMENT

Spade & Trenching Shovel: For manual sod-cutting, earth excavation, and squaring out clean trench bottoms.

Petrol Disc Cutter / Angle Grinder: Fitted with a high-grade diamond blade for cleanly cutting paved driveways, block borders, or adjusting plastic channel lengths.

Spirit Level & Line Pins / String: Crucial for establishing a continuous fall, ensuring that water flows smoothly down the slope without pooling.

Rubber Mallet: Used to bed the drainage channels gently into wet bedding concrete without damaging or cracking the casing.

Wheelbarrow & Shovel: For carrying away dug-out clay and transporting wet concrete mixes or bulk hardcore.

Stiff Broom: For final sweep-up of jointing sand and masonry debris on finished pathways.

Materials, Fixings & Accessories

Drainage Channels: Linear interlocking plastic or concrete channel units (typically 1000mm long) with metal or plastic grates.

Gullies & Catch Basins: Dedicated drainage hubs designed to collect water, catch debris, and block sewer odours.

Pipes & Connectors: Standard 110mm underground drainage pipes, bends, couplers, and end caps to route runoff into the outlet point.

Concrete / Adhesives: All-purpose concrete mix (cement and ballast) or high-grade structural bedding adhesive to lock the channels in place.

Fixings: Grate screws, anchor brackets, or sealing tape to lock the connections.

MOT Type 1 / Clause 804 Hardcore: Compacted stone sub-base aggregate to create a firm, stable layer underneath the concrete bedding.

Top Tip: Gravity is Your Friend.
Always maintain a positive, consistent fall of at least 1 in 100 (10mm of drop for every 1000mm of horizontal run) toward your discharge point or gully. If you install your channels completely flat, silt and debris will accumulate inside, blocking the channel and rendering your drainage system useless.
Top Tip: Run the Channel 3mm Below the Paving.
The top surface of your channel grate must always sit roughly 3mm to 5mm below the level of the surrounding driveway, patio, or pavement. If the grate sits level with or higher than the paving, water will pool along the side of the channel instead of draining away.

Step-by-Step DIY Installation Guide

STEP

01

Planning and Marking Out
Mark the Drainage Line:
Map out the exact path of your linear drainage run using line pins and a highly visible builder’s string line. Keep the string taut and set to your target finished pavement level.
Determine the Discharge Point:
Locate where the water will exit—whether into a dedicated soakaway, a catch basin gully, or an existing underground surface water pipe.

Excavating the Trench
Dig to Depth:
Excavate a trench along your marked line. The trench must be deep enough to accommodate 100mm of stone sub-base, a 100mm concrete bedding layer, plus the physical depth of your drainage channel unit.
Ensure Extra Width:
Dig the trench roughly 100mm wider on each side of the channel unit. This leaves enough room to pack concrete firmly around the outer walls of the channel.

Laying the Sub-base and Bedding Concrete
Add and Compact Hardcore:
Pour 100mm of Clause 804 hardcore into the trench floor and pack it down securely.
Pour Bedding Concrete:
Mix a semi-dry concrete mix (1 part cement to 4 parts aggregate/sand) and place a 100mm deep bed along the compacted trench base. Use your shovel and spirit level to slope the concrete bed slightly toward your discharge outlet.

Placing and Interlocking the Channels
Fit the End Caps:
Clip an end cap onto the highest point of your channel run. Attach the outlet connector or pipe adapter onto the lowest end.
Position the Units:
Lay your first channel unit onto the wet concrete bed. Connect subsequent units together using their interlocking joints. Press them down firmly, tapping with your rubber mallet. Use your spirit level to verify a consistent downhill fall.
Keep Grates On:
Always keep the grates fitted inside the plastic channel casings during the installation process. The grates prevent the channel side walls from bowing inward under the lateral pressure of the curing concrete backfill.

05

Connecting to Gullies or Pipes
Assemble Pipework:
Connect the lowest point of your channel run or catch basin directly to your underground pipe network using standard 110mm connectors and solvent cement.
Set Catch Basins:
Set any inline gullies or catch basins fully level in concrete beds, aligning their inlet ports with your channel lines.

06

Concrete Backfilling and Finishing
Backfill the Sides:
Pack concrete down into the open spaces on both sides of the channel walls. Smooth the top edge with a trowel, sloping it slightly away from the channel grate.
Reinstate Paving:
Lay your surrounding driveway paving or patio stones against the concrete shoulder, ensuring the paving sits 3mm higher than your finished channel grate. Wash down the workspace using a hose once the concrete has fully cured.
