How to Insulate Underneath Suspended Timber Floors

The Step-by-Step DIY Guide

The DIY Checklist:
What You’ll Need

Suspended timber ground floors are common in older Irish homes. Without insulation, cold air from the external air bricks sweeps under the floorboards, causing severe draughts and huge heat loss. Overhauling this setup from below or during a renovation requires a complete system package to do the job safely and effectively.

1.

SAFETY
GEAR
(PPE)

FFP3 Dust Mask / Respirator: Highest level particulate protection. Essential when working in confined subfloor spaces with falling dust, older debris, and loose mineral wool fibres.

Disposable Type 5/6 Coveralls (with Hood): Keeps irritating dust and fibers off your skin and clothing while crawling.

Protective Goggles: Close-fitting protection to shield eyes from falling floor debris and loose insulation strands.

Knee Pads: Crucial for physical comfort when spending hours kneeling on joist frames or subfloor crawl surfaces.

Heavy Duty Nitrile or Grip Gloves: Protects hands from splinters, staple punctures, and skin irritation.

2.

TOOLS &
EQUIPMENT

Heavy Duty Staple Gun: For anchoring membranes and wire mesh webs securely up to the timber joists.

Insulation Saw or Long Serrated Knife: For cutting dense mineral wool batts cleanly without tearing the core matrix.

Utility Knife: Sharp blade used to slice through breathable membranes and airtight tapes swiftly.

Tape Measure: For calculating exact internal joist spacing and run lengths.

Headtorch: Hands-free high-illumination lighting necessary for navigating dark crawl spaces underneath joists.

3.

Materials, Fixings & Accessories

Mineral Wool Insulation Batts: Flexible, breathable stone or glass mineral wool batts. These slot tightly between timbers without settling or leaving air gaps.

Breathable Membrane: Placed beneath the insulation on the cold crawl-space side to protect against wind-wash while letting moisture escape safely.

Netting or Wire Mesh Rolls: Supports the weight of the insulation batts, keeping them pinned tightly up into the floorboards permanently.

Heavy Duty Staples (10mm to 12mm): Weatherproof heavy steel staples to anchor netting and membranes under structural wood loads.

Airtight / Vapor Control Tape: Specialized high-performance adhesive tape used to seal overlapping membrane sheets and rim joints completely.

Top Tip: Don't Block Air Bricks!
Subfloor ventilation is critical for timber health in Ireland. While your goal is to stop draughts inside the room, you must never block the external air bricks or vents below the insulation line. The air must still circulate underneath the new membrane to prevent subfloor dampness and wood rot.
Top Tip: The Tight Friction-Fit.
Mineral wool batts should be cut roughly 10mm wider than the clear gap between your floor joists. This allows the batts to be pushed into place with a firm friction-fit, keeping them snugly up against the floorboards above without any sagging gaps that let cold air bypass the system.

Step-by-Step DIY Installation Guide

STEP

01

Check Joist Spacing & Access
Measure Gaps:
Measure the clear span between your timber floor joists. Joists are typically spaced on centers around 400mm or 600mm, but older structures can vary wildly.
Prepare the Space:
Ensure subfloor wood surfaces are clear of old protruding nails. Clear away any loose debris from the crawl space floor to create a clean workspace.

STEP

02

Install Support Netting or Wire Mesh
Create the Support Hammock:
If you are working from the crawl space underneath, staple your netting or wire mesh across the bottom edge of the joists.
Staple Securely:
Use your heavy duty staple gun loaded with 10mm to 12mm staples to pin the mesh lines every 150mm along the timber flanks, creating a strong pocket matrix to carry the insulation weight.

STEP

03

Measure and Cut Mineral Wool Batts
Apply the Over-Sizing Metric:
Take the clear joist width dimension and add exactly 10mm. Mark this line out straight across your mineral wool insulation batt faces.
Saw Cleanly:
Using an insulation saw or long serrated knife, cut through the batt with a steady slicing motion. Keeping cuts crisp ensures no empty air pockets form at the timber junctions.

STEP

04

Slot the Insulation Batts in Position
Push Home Tightly:
Dress into your disposable hooded suit, goggles, and FFP3 mask. Push the cut mineral wool batts up into the joist cavities.
Flush to Floorboards:
Ensure the top face of the insulation makes direct, flat contact with the underside of the floorboards above. Any gap left here will trap moving air, significantly dropping the thermal performance of your floor.

STEP

05

Apply the Protective Breathable Membrane
Roll and Cover:
Run your breathable membrane sheets over the exposed cold face of the insulation and joist bases. This acts as a wind-barrier shield to stop cold winter drafts from scrubbing heat out of your mineral wool insulation.
Overlap Joins:
Where sheets meet, ensure a minimum overlap of 150mm. Staple the membrane along the timber joist undersides every 200mm.

STEP

06

Apply Airtight / Vapor Control Tape
Seal the Seams:
Peel the backing from your premium airtight tape and seal all overlapping membrane lines. Press firmly along the tape to ensure a deep, permanent bond.
Seal the Perimeter Rim:
Run the tape along the outer perimeter edges where the membrane meets structural masonry walls or perimeter timbers to guarantee an airtight envelope across the entire floor layout.
