The Step-by-Step DIY Guide for Your Garden

The DIY Checklist:
What You’ll Need

Before you clear a space in the garden, make sure you have your safety gear, tools, and materials sorted. You can find all of these at your local builder’s merchant or tool hire centre.

Mixing bucket or cement mixer: Essential setup for mixing bedding and edge mortar.

Hosepipe or watering can: For dampening sand and cement structures during installation.

Slab cutter / angle grinder with diamond blade: Needed if your paving layout requires trimming or stone modifications.

MATERIALS

Paving slabs: Your primary surface flag stones (Porcelain, Sandstone, Limestone, or Concrete).

Sub-base material – Hard Core: Structural crushed stone or certified Clause 804 aggregate base.

Sharp sand: Used for levelling, grading, and bedding layers.

Building sand: Used in the joint and mortar mix compositions.

Cement: The active binding component for your structural wet bedding mortars.

Jointing compound or dry mix mortar: For sealing and finishing the joints between flags.

Weed membrane: A structural barrier layer underneath to prevent breakthrough weed growth.

Edging stones, bricks, or sleepers: Sturdy borders to outline and contain your patio boundary.

Gravel or decorative stone: Ideal for framing borders, enhancing drainage, or side detailing.

Drainage Channel: Linear channel drainage tracks to systematically carry surface rainfall run-off away.

Spacers: To guarantee perfect alignment and consistent 5-10mm joint widths between stones.

Sealer: A surface protectant applied afterward to protect the finished slabs from weather and biological stains.

Step-by-Step DIY Installation Guide

STEP

01

Draw Your Plan & ‘Dry Lay’ the Slabs
SKETCH IT OUT:
Draw your patio area to scale on graph paper, including nearby features like your house, walls, or fencing.
MAP THE SITE:
Drive wooden stakes into the corners and run a string line between them to outline the area. Use a builder’s square to check that your corners are at a perfect
90-degree angle.
THE TEST RUN (DRY LAY):
Before doing any heavy digging, lay your slabs out on the ground exactly how you want them using your spacers. This lets you see how it looks, ensures your measurements are right, and helps you avoid cutting slabs later. Take a photo on your phone for reference later.
DIY PRO TIP:
Measure diagonally from corner to corner; if the two diagonal lengths are identical, your layout is perfectly square

02

Safety Scan & Digging Deep
SCAN FIRST:
Before your spade hits the dirt, sweep the area with a Cable Avoidance Tool (CAT). Buried pipes or cables should be at least 450mm down, but it’s always best to be 100% safe.
DIG IT OUT:
Dig out the entire area with your spade and shovel, making the pit slightly wider than the finished patio to give the outer edging elements a stable, structural foundation.
CALCULATE YOUR DEPTH:
You need to dig deep enough to fit your hardcore, your bedding layer, and the thickness of the slab itself. For example, to allow for 100mm of hardcore, a 25mm bedding layer, and a 50mm slab, you’ll need to dig down exactly 175mm.
THE HOUSE RULE:
If your patio sits right next to your house, the top surface of the finished slabs must be at least 150mm below your home’s Damp Proof Course (DPC) line to stop moisture from seeping into your walls.

03

Getting the “Fall”
(Drainage) Right
PATIOS MUST NEVER BE PERFECTLY FLAT, OR RAINWATER WILL POOL ON THEM. THE SURFACE MUST GENTLY SLOPE AWAY FROM YOUR HOUSE OR WALLS.

For smooth, non-textured slabs, aim for a 1:60 slope (a 16mm drop for every 1 metre of patio length).
For textured slabs, aim for a 1:80 slope (a 12.5mm drop per metre).

EXAMPLE:
If your patio extends 4 metres out from the house, your total drop from the highest point to the lowest point will be 64mm (4 metres x 16mm = 64mm).
PEG YOUR LEVELS:
Drive a row of wooden stakes into the ground across the site. Mark the target height on the pegs, accounting for your drainage slope. Lay a long piece of straight timber and a spirit level across the tops of the pegs to ensure your slope is perfectly even.

Laying the
Hardcore Sub-Base
WEED BARRIERS:
Lay down your weed membrane across the excavated footprint before filling to suppress future wild breakthrough growth.
SPREAD THE STONE:
Fill the area with your hardcore sub-base material using your wheelbarrow and rake it level.
DO IT IN LAYERS:
For a rock-solid foundation that won’t sink over time, fill and compact the hardcore in two separate stages. Put down a 50mm layer first, rake it level, and go over it thoroughly with the rented plate compactor. Then, add the second 50mm layer and compact it down until it sits completely flush with the marks on your guide pegs.

Preparing the Bedding Layer
DEPENDING ON THE TYPE OF STONE YOU CHOSE, PREPARE YOUR BEDDING LAYER USING ONE OF THESE SIMPLE METHODS:
OPTION A:
The Wet Mortar Mix (Best for Natural Stone)
Mix 4 parts sharp sand to 1 part cement (or 6 parts grit sand to 1 part cement). Pour roughly half a bucket of water into the cement mixer, throw in half the sand, add all the cement, and finish with the rest of the sand. Add water slowly using a hosepipe or watering can until it feels like thick whipped cream—it should hold its shape easily but still be easily moldable. Only mix what you can use within two hours before it hardens.
OPTION B:
The Dry Screed Bed (Best for Calibrated or Man-Made Slabs)
Lay down metal screed rails and use a straight wooden board to smooth out a flat, uniform bed of 3mm grit sand or sharp sand. Establish this bed about 5–10mm higher than your target depth—it will compact down nicely when you tap the slabs into place. Once smoothed, avoid walking on it.
OPTION C:
Pre-Mixed Slablayer. Rake out your Slablayer compound to a depth of 25mm, give it a light misting with a garden spray gun or hose, and rake it
one final time to level it off.

06

Laying Your First
“Key” Slab
START AT THE TOP:
Strap on your knee pads and always lay your very first slab in the corner at the highest point of your patio layout (or right against the house wall). This is your “key slab,” and it acts as the master guide for the rest of the job.
SET THE BED:
If using wet mortar, spread a full 60mm deep layer of the mix onto the sub-base, making it slightly larger than the footprint of the slab so there are no empty gaps underneath.
PLACE THE SLAB:
Dampen the back of the paving slab with a wet brush or spray gun to help it stick to the bed. Carefully lower it into position—ask someone to help you lift heavy flags.
BED IT DOWN:
Place a scrap piece of timber on top of the slab to protect the stone, and gently tap it down on all four corners using your rubber mallet until it sits firmly and doesn’t rock. Use your spirit level constantly to make sure it is perfectly aligned with your slope pegs.

Laying the Rest of
Your Patio
FOLLOW THE GRID:
Work outward from your key slab, progressing row-by-row along your guide string line.
KEEP GAPS CONSISTENT:
As you lay each slab, place your plastic spacers or small offcuts of wood to maintain a uniform 5mm to 10mm gap between every single slab.
CHECK YOUR WORK:
Keep your long spirit level handy. Ensure every single stone sits completely flat across its own surface while maintaining that overall downward slope for water drainage. Use a trowel to pack extra mortar into any small hollows you spot under the edges. Use your slab cutter or angle grinder to trim perimeter slabs cleanly to fit around curves or corners.
LET IT CURE:
Once all the slabs are down, keep off the patio and let the bedding dry completely for at least 48 hours. If weather threatens rain, cover your hard work with a plastic tarpaulin.

Channel Drainage &
Edging (Managing
the Irish Rain)
Given Ireland’s high volume of rainfall, managing surface water is arguably the most critical component of a lasting installation. While standard drainage slopes run-off safely into lawns, certain layouts require heavy-duty intervention.
WHY CHANNEL DRAINAGE IS VITAL IN IRELAND
Because properties in Ireland frequently experience prolonged rainfall and heavily saturated soil conditions, rainwater running off a large, non porous surface like a patio cannot soak away quickly enough at the perimeter. You MUST install channel drainage (Aco drains) if:

• The patio slopes directly toward your house, garage, or structural walls.
• The patio is tightly bounded by block walls, steps, or raised flower beds that create a sealed pool or trap water.
• The local ground layout features heavy, slow-draining clay soils.

CHANNEL DRAINAGE CHECKLIST & INSTALLATION
Products Required: 1-metre plastic or polymer concrete interlocking channel drains (with galvanized steel or plastic grates), channel end-caps, an end-outlet connector, 110mm underground drainage pipe, and general-purpose cement for concrete seating.
HOW-TO INSTALL:
DIG THE TRENCH:
Dig a linear trench along the planned drainage line (typically directly adjacent to the house wall or at the lowest point of the slope). The trench needs to be deep enough to hold a 50mm concrete base plus the full depth of the channel piece.
SET THE LEVELS:
Connect your channel units together. Run a string line to establish a subtle fall within the channel toward your disposal point (the main soakaway or gully).
LAY THE CONCRETE BED:
Pour a semi-dry concrete mix into the trench base. Firmly press the channels into the wet mix, keeping the top grate sitting exactly 2mm to 5mm below the level of the finished paving slabs.
CONNECT OUTLETS:
Fix an end-cap at the high end of the runs and an end-outlet at the low point. Connect the outlet to your 110mm underground pipe running down to your discharge gully.
PAVE UP TO THE GRATE:
Lay your bedding mortar and flags tightly up against the sides of the channels, ensuring your final slope smoothly meets the drainage edge.

Edging, Pointing
& Sealing
LOCK THE EDGES (HAUNCHING):
To stop the outer edges of your patio from shifting or spreading over time, mix a bit of concrete and build a supportive slope (a haunch) against the exposed outside edges of your perimeter slabs. Smooth it flat with the back of a spade or trowel. Install your edging stones, bricks, or sleepers to lock the perimeter into place. Fill flanking borders with gravel or decorative stone for a polished look.
FILL THE JOINTS (POINTING):

Choose the method that fits your joint size once the patio is dry:

  • Tight Joints (<5mm): Pour dry kiln-dried sand onto the patio and use a soft broom to sweep it directly into the gaps until they are completely full, then brush away the leftover sand.

  • Standard Joints (5mm to 10mm): Mix a dry blend of 1 part sand to 1 part cement, or use a proprietary jointing compound or dry mix mortar. Sprinkle it along the joints, sweep it in, and use a pointing trowel to firmly pack it down deep into the gaps. Always sweep every bit of stray cement dust off the surface of your slabs immediately, or it will
    permanently stain the stone when it gets damp.

  • Wide Joints (>10mm): Mix a damp, smooth mortar of 4 parts sand to 1 part cement with a little water in a bucket. Carefully press it into the joints using a pointing trowel, smooth it flat, and clean up any excess instantly.
THE GOLDEN RULE:
Keep completely off your brand-new patio for at least 24 hours after pointing before setting out your garden furniture, BBQ, fire pit, or outdoor lighting. Give the surface a quick coat of sealer a few weeks later to keep it looking pristine through the winter months.
