Plastic or Metal Path Edging: Rigid or flexible borders to lock gravel or stones inside the path bounds and prevent lawn encroachment.

Bedding Sand: Clean sharp sand to level stepping stones or provide a flat, fine bedding layer above the hardcore.

Path Materials (Gravel or Pavers): Decorative angular gravel (typically 10mm to 20mm size) or flat natural stepping stones.

Jointing Sand (Optional): Fine kiln-dried sand to fill gaps between stepping stones if laid in a close-fitting format.

Top Tip: Use Angular Gravel, Not Round Pebbles.

When choosing your top aggregate, opt for angular crushed gravel (such as golden flint or limestone) rather than smooth, round river pebbles. Angular stones lock together under foot, creating a firm, walkable surface, whereas round stones slip and roll underfoot like marbles.

Top Tip: The Clause 804 Sub-Base is Mandatory.

With high annual rainfall in Ireland, laying gravel directly onto mud or sand will result in a muddy, sunken mess within months. Excavate a minimum of 75mm to 100mm and pack a minimum of 50mm of MOT Type 1 (Clause 804 hardcore) beneath your sand or gravel layer to ensure proper structural drainage.

Step-by-Step DIY Installation Guide

01

Mark and Excavate the Path

Set Out Your Lines:

Use wooden pegs and a tightly pulled string line to map out the borders of your new path. For winding paths, a garden hose is a great way to map curves.

Excavate the Turf:

Use your spade and lawn edger to slice the grass borders. Dig out the soil to a uniform depth of roughly 100mm. Smooth and compact the base of the open trench.

Install Path Edging

Secure the Borders:

Fit your plastic or metal path edging along the trench walls. This separates your path material from the surrounding lawn.

Anchor Firmly:

Drive plastic or steel fixing stakes through the edging tracks into the subsoil using your rubber mallet, checking along the way with a spirit level.

Lay and Compact the Hardcore Sub-Base

Pour the MOT Type 1:

Shovel your Clause 804 / MOT Type 1 hardcore into the excavated trench to a depth of roughly 50mm.

Compact Thoroughly:

Use your manual hand tamper (or hired plate compactor) to pack the aggregate tightly. Wetting the stones slightly with a hose can help them compact even tighter.

Roll Out the Weed Barrier

Lay the Membrane:

Lay out your heavy-duty weed membrane directly over the compacted hardcore base.

Overlap and Pin:

Overlap any seams by at least 150mm. Use metal garden staples or plastic pins to hold the membrane securely in place.

Lay Bedding Sand and Stepping Stones (If Applicable)

Spread Bedding Sand:

For paths utilizing pavers or stepping stones, spread a 25mm level bed of sharp sand over the weed membrane.

Set Your Stones:

Place the stepping stones on the sand, leaving comfortable stride gaps (roughly 500mm to 600mm from centre to centre). Tap each stone level with your rubber mallet, checking height alignment against your border edging.

Spread the Decorative Gravel

Infill the Void:

Shovel your decorative gravel onto the path, filling around your stepping stones or directly across the weed membrane to a depth of 30mm to 40mm.

Rake Flat:

Use a metal garden rake to spread the gravel evenly. Ensure it sits roughly 10mm below the top of your boundary edging to prevent stones from spilling onto the surrounding grass.
