How to Lay a Stone or Gravel Garden Path
The DIY Checklist:
What You’ll Need
1.
GEAR
(PPE)
Heavy-Duty Garden Gloves: Protects hands from sharp stones, abrasive gravel, and heavy pavers.
Comfortable Kneepads: Crucial for protecting joints while laying individual stepping stones, pinning weed membranes, or fixing edging tracks.
Safety Glasses: Protects eyes from flying soil, stone splinters, or mallet strikes during assembly.
2.
EQUIPMENT
Spade & Half-Moon Lawn Edger: For slicing through turf cleanly and excavating the path track.
Manual Compactor / Tamper: Essential for consolidating the hardcore sub-base to prevent uneven sinking over time. For longer paths, a hired petrol plate compactor is highly recommended.
Rubber Mallet: For tapping stepping stones or edging pegs securely into position without cracking the materials.
Rakes & Trowels: A metal soil rake is key to spreading aggregates and bedding sand evenly.
Spirit Level & String Line: Keeps your path lines straight and ensures consistent leveling across the layout.
Wheelbarrow: Necessary for moving heavy loads of hardcore sub-base, sand, and gravel from your delivery bags.
3.
Sub-Base Hardcore (MOT Type 1 / Clause 804): Granular crushed stone down to dust, which compacts into a rock-solid, load-bearing drainage layer.
Heavy-Duty Weed Membrane & Fixing Pins: Landscaping fabric to stop deep-rooted weeds from pushing through your aggregate.
Plastic or Metal Path Edging: Rigid or flexible borders to lock gravel or stones inside the path bounds and prevent lawn encroachment.
Bedding Sand: Clean sharp sand to level stepping stones or provide a flat, fine bedding layer above the hardcore.
Path Materials (Gravel or Pavers): Decorative angular gravel (typically 10mm to 20mm size) or flat natural stepping stones.
Jointing Sand (Optional): Fine kiln-dried sand to fill gaps between stepping stones if laid in a close-fitting format.

Estimated Materials Required
• Bulk Bags Yield: Standard aggregate bulk bags contain approximately 850kg (roughly 0.5 cubic metres volume coverage).
• Hardcore Coverage: 1 Bulk Bag of MOT Type 1 covers approximately 10 m² at 50mm depth.
• Gravel Coverage: 1 Bulk Bag of decorative stone covers approximately 12 m² at a standard 40mm depth.
• Stepping Stones: Estimated at a user-friendly interval of 1 stone every 0.6 metres of path run length.
