How to Refresh and Upgrade Your Garden Shed

The Step-by-Step DIY Guide

What You’ll Need

In wet, windy Irish climates, garden sheds take a severe beating. High ambient moisture and heavy winter gales can quickly wear out roof felt, rot timber floor bases, and rust lock assemblies. Upgrading your garden shed with heavy-duty weather protections, custom robust leveling bases, and internal shelving creates a resilient, highly usable workspace and storage hub.

Work Gloves: Protects hands from abrasive roofing felt grit, timber splinters, and chemical roofing adhesive.

Materials, Fixings & Accessories

Shed Kits (Timber/Metal/Plastic): Complete structural kits or replacement timber panels where timber rot has taken hold.

Roof Felt, Panels, & Ridges: Heavy-duty bitumen felt rolls (typically 10m x 1m rolls) or corrugated roof sheeting for a long-term water-tight seal.

Shed Floor Kits: High-density timber sheet flooring to swap out sagged or water-damaged interior floor panels.

Felt Adhesive: High-bond cold liquid asphalt adhesive to prevent gale-force Irish winds from lifting felt edges.

Fixings & Anchors: Large-headed clout nails for the felt, heavy-duty outdoor-rated wood screws, and expansion masonry bolts to secure base frames.

Door Locks & Heavy-Duty Hardware: Galvanised padbolts, robust hinges, and rust-resistant security hasps.

Wall Shelving Kits: Space-saving wall-mounted racking or adjustable shelving track uprights to organise storage.

Concrete Blocks / Paving Slabs: Base materials for leveling the shed floor structure off damp soil (typically 400mm x 400mm x 40mm paving slabs).

Sharp Sand & Cement: For creating a semi-dry leveling mix underneath foundation blocks or slabs to establish a permanent, rot-free base.

Bitumen clout nails alone won't keep roof felt secured during harsh winter storms. Always apply a generous, continuous 100mm perimeter layer of liquid cold-applied felt adhesive along all overlaps and eaves. This adhesive bonds the sheets into a single wind-resistant membrane.
Top Tip: Lift the Base Off the Wet Soil.
Placing a timber garden shed directly onto soil, grass, or gravel causes quick rot. Lay down a level course of concrete blocks or paving slabs resting on a semi-dry sand and cement mix. Ensure the bottom of the timber frame sits at least 50mm above the soil level to prevent ground moisture from wicking into your floorboards.

Step-by-Step DIY Installation Guide

01

Inspect the Structure & Base Prep
Clear the Area:
Empty out the shed fully. Inspect the bottom frame timber plates and floorboards for wet rot. Replace any crumbling timber with treated framing wood.
Check the Base:
If the shed has sagged, use your 1200mm spirit level to find low points. Place solid concrete paving slabs under the corners, bedded on a semi-dry sharp sand and cement mix (usually mixed at a 4:1 ratio) to lift and level the framing.

Replace Rotting Roof Felt
Tear Off the Old:
Carefully remove rusted clout nails and strip away rotten, leaking roofing felt. Inspect the underlying roof boards. Clean away debris and replace any damp-compromised timber panels.
Measure and Cut:
Measure the length of your roof, adding roughly 100mm overhang on each gable end. Roll out the heavy-duty bitumen roof felt on the ground and slice it cleanly using a utility knife.
Apply Adhesive and Lay Panels:
Start at the lowest eave. Brush a thick line of felt adhesive along the lower edge of the roof. Roll the first felt panel into place, allowing a 50mm drop over the eave to shed water. Nail along the top edge at 150mm intervals. Lap the next sheets over by at least 100mm, sealing the overlaps with more liquid felt adhesive.

Lay Floor Upgrades
Install Flooring Sheets:
If the interior floor is weak, secure high-density timber sheet floor kits over the existing floor joists. Use heavy-duty outdoor-rated wood screws spaced every 200mm to eliminate floor squeaks and sagging.

Lock Upgrade & Hardware Fitting
Fit Secure Hinges:
Swap out bent or rusted door hinges. Use heavy-duty galvanised T-hinges with secure through-bolts to resist forced entry.
Install Padbolts:
Mount a heavy-duty galvanised padbolt or security hasp. Ensure all fixings are screwed deep into the main door framing timber behind the thin cladding boards.

Wall Shelving & Internal Organisation
Locate Vertical Studs:
Never mount shelving directly to thin outer shed cladding. Locate the solid vertical wall studs.
Fix Uprights:
Secure your adjustable shelving tracks or wood supports to these vertical studs using robust wood screws. Level them with your spirit level before fully tightening. Assemble the shelving boards into place.
