How to Refresh Your Bedrooms with a New Coat of Paint

The Step-by-Step DIY Guide

The DIY Checklist:
What You’ll Need

A fresh coat of paint can completely transform a bedroom, making it feel brighter, cleaner, and more spacious. Given Ireland's damp climate and fluctuating seasonal temperatures, selecting high-quality breathable paints, properly managing plaster prep work, and gathering a complete basket of tools guarantees a flawless, long-lasting, professional finish.

1.

SAFETY
GEAR
(PPE)

Dust Mask (P2 or FFP2): Crucial when sanding down old wall fillers, peeling paint, or rough plaster patches.

Safety Glasses: Protects eyes from paint splatters and falling plaster dust when painting ceilings.

2.

TOOLS &
EQUIPMENT

Paint Rollers & Trays: Typically 230mm medium pile rollers for walls and ceilings, and small gloss rollers for trim.

Paint Brushes (Cutting-in): Premium synthetic angled brushes (50mm to 70mm width) for clean edges and crisp corners.

Extension Pole: An adjustable pole to comfortably roll ceilings and high wall sections without overstretching.

Step Ladder: A secure platform for cutting-in along ceiling lines and top corners safely.

Filling Knife & Scraper: Multi-use blades to clean out loose plaster, open cracks, and apply fresh joint fillers.

Caulking Gun: To smoothly run flexible acrylic decorator's caulk into skirting boards, frames, and internal corners.

3.

Materials, Fixings & Accessories

Interior Emulsion Paints: Breathable matt or soft-sheen emulsion paint. Standard coverage estimates are roughly 10 square metres to 12 square metres per litre per coat.

Primer & Undercoat: Necessary to seal bare drywall, fresh plaster patches, or to transition between high-contrast paint colours.

Masking Tape & Drop Cloths: High-grade painter's tape to prevent bleed, alongside heavy-duty canvas or plastic sheets to completely protect bedroom floors and furniture.

Sandpaper & Patch Filler: Fine 120-grit sandpapers and lightweight, shrink-resistant wall filler to repair nail holes and hairline cracks.

Sugar Soap & Degreaser: A mild liquid cleanser to remove grease, fingerprints, and household dust before applying any fresh coatings.

Caulk (Interior Painters Grade): Flexible, paintable white acrylic gap filler for skirting boards, doors, and window casings.

Top Tip: The Sugar Soap Wash is Non-Negotiable.
Skipping the wash step is the primary cause of paint peeling later on. Bedroom walls collect invisible layers of dust, skin oils, and condensation film. Always wash the walls and skirting boards with warm water and sugar soap, then wipe down with clean water before opening any paint cans.
Top Tip: Caulk After Priming, Never Before.
Apply your painters caulk after you have completed your wall priming and first cleaning rounds. If you lay down flexible caulk over dry, unsealed plaster or dusty timber, it will pull away as it dries. Let the caulk cure for at least an hour before painting over it.

Step-by-Step DIY Installation Guide

STEP

01

Prep the Room and Clean Walls
Clear the Space:
Remove as much bedroom furniture as possible. Group remaining items in the centre of the room and cover them completely with heavy-duty drop cloths.
Wash the Walls:
Scrub down the wall surfaces, focus areas around light switches, and skirting boards with warm water mixed with sugar soap. Wipe down with clean water and let the room dry completely.

STEP

02

Repair and Sand Imperfections
Scrape and Fill:
Use your filling knife to scrape away old peeling paint or loose material. Press patch filler firmly into nail holes and plaster cracks. Overfill slightly, as the compound can shrink as it dries.
Sanding:
Once dry, put on your dust mask and safety glasses. Sand the filled areas flat with fine 120-grit sandpaper until they blend seamlessly with the surrounding wall. Wipe away any lingering dust with a damp cloth.

STEP

03

Masking and Caulking
Apply Masking Tape:
Run your painter's masking tape along skirting boards, light switches, and window trim. Press the tape edges down firmly with your fingers to prevent paint bleed.
Seal the Gaps:
Load your interior painter's caulk into the caulking gun. Cut the nozzle at a 45-degree angle and run a thin, continuous bead along the joints between skirting boards, door frames, and the walls. Smooth the bead with a damp finger.

STEP

04

Priming
Seal the Repairs:
Apply an interior primer over fresh plaster patches, deep repairs, or dark previous paint jobs. If you paint directly over raw filler patches, the dry filler will absorb moisture from your emulsion, creating flat, patchy "flashing" spots.

STEP

05

Cutting-In
Paint the Borders:
Dip your cutting-in brush roughly 30mm into your wall emulsion paint. Paint a 50mm to 75mm band along the ceiling line, corners, and around window frames. Work in sections of 2 to 3 metres at a time to maintain a wet edge, ensuring the rolled paint blends smoothly with the brushed borders.

STEP

06

Rolling the Walls and Ceiling
Roll the Ceiling:
If painting the ceiling, always complete this step first using a white flat matt paint on your extension pole.
Roll the Walls:
Dampen your medium pile roller slightly to help it absorb paint, then load it evenly in your paint tray. Roll onto the wall in a large 'W' or 'M' pattern to distribute the paint, then fill in the gaps with vertical strokes. Do not press too hard. Let the coat dry fully for 4 hours before applying the second coat.

STEP

07

Clean Up and Untape
Peel the Tape:
Pull masking tape away at a sharp 45-degree angle while the second coat of paint is still slightly damp. This prevents the dried paint membrane from lifting or tearing away at the seam.
