How to Seal and Paint a Concrete Garage Floor

The Step-by-Step DIY Guide

The DIY Checklist:
What You’ll Need

Transforming your garage floor with a protective, painted seal locks down loose concrete dust, stops oil staining, and leaves a clean, bright workspace. Because concrete in Irish environments can hold ambient ground dampness, proper chemical preparation, crack sealing, and precise multi-coat painting are essential steps for a long-lasting, durable finish.

1.

SAFETY
GEAR
(PPE)

Respirator Mask (with organic vapor cartridges): Critical protection against heavy fumes while using powerful concrete floor paints or epoxy seal resins.

Safety Goggles: Wraparound eye protection to defend against acid etch splashes and paint splatters.

Heavy-Duty Rubber Boots & Rubber Gloves: Chemical-resistant protection to protect hands and skin during the deep washing and acid etching prep cycles.

2.

TOOLS &
EQUIPMENT

Industrial Vacuum Cleaner or Soft Sweeping Broom: For picking up fine concrete dust, dirt flakes, and loose sand particles before painting.

Stiff Scrubbing Broom: Used to brush the concrete cleaner and acid etch liquid hard into the floor pours.

Heavy-Duty Roller Frame & Extension Pole: Enables you to apply paint coatings smoothly from a comfortable upright standing position.

12-Inch Roller Sleeves (Medium Pile): Sized wide to distribute floor coatings quickly and evenly without leaving thin streaks.

Paint Tray: A large, stable paint container to load wide 12-inch floor roller sleeves smoothly.

2-Inch to 3-Inch Paintbrush: For clean, precise edge cutting along walls, expansion joints, and corner trims.

Paint Stirrer / Mixing Paddle Drill Attachment: Ensures a uniform mixture by blending heavy floor pigments or mixing multi-part epoxy formulas completely.

Moisture Test Kit (or a roll of clear plastic tape): Used to audit subfloor moisture levels before committing to a paint coat.

3.

Materials, Fixings & Accessories

Concrete Floor Paint or Epoxy Garage Floor Kits: High-wear resilient floor paint formulated to bind tightly onto exterior concrete slab frameworks.

Concrete Cleaner / Acid Etch Solution: A chemical compound used to wash out ground grease and safely roughen smooth concrete surfaces to accept a coat.

Concrete Crack & Joint Filler: Heavy-duty compound designed to mend structural floor fractures and seal moving expansion lines flat.

Painter's Masking Tape: Low-tack boundary tape to mask off skirting trim paths, pipe loops, or side walls cleanly.

Top Tip: Run the 24-Hour Dampness Test!
Irish concrete garage floors are highly prone to hidden rising dampness. Before opening a single can of paint, tape a 500mm x 500mm square piece of clear plastic sheet flat onto your bare floor using clear packing tape. Leave it for 24 hours. If dark condensation droplets form underneath the plastic sheet, your concrete is too wet to paint, and any floor coat will peel away.
Top Tip: Concrete Must Feel Like Sandpaper.
New or very smooth power-trowelled concrete has a slick finish that prevents floor paint from anchoring. Applying an acid etch solution is critical to open the tiny pores of the concrete. When your floor is dry after etching, pass your fingers over the face—it should have a slight rough texture like fine-grit sandpaper.

Step-by-Step DIY Installation Guide

STEP

01

Empty and Clear the Workspace
Clear Everything Out:
Move all cars, storage boxes, and machinery out of the garage. Use your soft sweeping broom or an industrial vacuum cleaner to collect fine sand, cobwebs, and concrete dust.

STEP

02

Repair Gaps and Structural Fractures
Fill the Crevices:
Look for structural lines or settling cracks across the garage floor. Vacuum out loose debris inside the cracks, and apply your concrete crack & joint filler until it sits level with the surrounding floor. Scraping any overflow down flat ensures your repairs dry seamlessly flush.

STEP

03

Scrape and Wash Away Oils
Degrease the Floor:
Scrape up any old dried mud or heavy grease blobs with a scraping blade. Apply a diluted mixture of concrete cleaner directly over oil drop patterns, and scrub the spots thoroughly using your stiff scrubbing broom. Flush the soapy water clean toward your exit door.

STEP

04

Acid Etch the Concrete Face
Apply the Etch Solution:
Put your heavy-duty rubber boots, gloves, and safety goggles on. Mix your acid etch solution in a clean bucket according to the package safety guides. Pour the liquid evenly onto the damp floor in sections, scrubbing it firmly into the concrete with your stiff broom. The mix will bubble as it reacts. Rinse the floor with fresh water three times to wash away all chemical traces, then let it dry for a full 24 to 48 hours.

STEP

05

Mask and Trim the Edges
Protect Your Borders:
Lay painter's masking tape along the bottom edge of your walls, door tracks, and structural posts to keep them clear of paint lines. Use your 2-inch to 3-inch paintbrush to paint a clean border path around the perimeter of the room.

STEP

06

Mix and Apply the First Paint Coat
Blend the Base:
Use your paint stirrer or mixing paddle drill attachment to mix your floor paint or two-part epoxy garage floor kit. If using a standard single-part paint, it is often recommended to dilute the first coat with 10% water or mineral spirits to create a primer coat that sinks deep into the concrete pores.
Roll Out the Strips:
Fit your 12-inch roller sleeve onto the extension pole frame. Starting at the back corner of the garage, pour paint onto the floor in long lines and roll it out evenly, working backward toward your exit door. Maintain a wet edge across the path to keep the finish uniform, and let it dry for 12 to 24 hours.

STEP

07

Apply the Final Wear Coat
Lay Down the Shield:
Apply a secondary full-strength layer of concrete paint crosswise over your dry first coat. Allow the finished garage floor to cure untouched for a full 24 hours before walking on the surface, and wait 3 to 5 days before parking any heavy vehicles on your new floor.
